Flanger
A very short sweeping delay that creates a "jet plane" whoosh. More metallic and more obvious than chorus.
How to recognise it by ear
- You hear a sweep that rises and falls like a passing jet, especially in the highs.
- It has a metallic, hollow tone caused by the peaks the feedback creates.
- If the sweep is softer, with "notches" rather than peaks, it is probably a phaser.
Typical settings
Delay from 1 to 10 ms, rate from 0.1 to 1 Hz and high feedback (40–80 %).
What Piano Effect measures
The sweep rate and range. A sustained chord is not reported as flanger: the engine requires the sweep trajectory to explain itself.
